Class 130 Cigarettes and stubs are united by uniting bands Whilst moving axially and the united assemblages are then moved laterally for a sufficient time to enable the adhesive on the uniting bands to be dried. Cigarette portions C are deposited on a conveyer band 1. and a stub wheel 4 deposits a double-length stub S in alternate spaces between the cigarettes C so that spaced groups, each group consisting of a stub S flanked by two cigarette portions C<SP>1</SP>, C' are formed on the band 1, the rearward cigarette portion C<SP>2</SP> of each group being pushed forward by a rotary adjusting device 5 to ensure that the cigarettes and stub of each group about one another. Each group is gripped between the conveyer 1 and an upper band 7 and a uniting band is appiled thereto around the stub S by a suction wheel 8, which uniting band is wrapped around the group by a wrapping mechanism 12 to unite the cigarettes to the stub, forming a united assemblage, and the assemblages are carried on a conveyer 11 beneath a heater 13 in which the adhesive on th uniting bands is partially dried. Each assemblage is then moved sideways off the conveyer 11 by a deflecting device 14, comprising a pusher plate mounted on a pair of crank discs 14a, and is rolled laterally by a band 15 over a heated plate 16 which further dries the adhesive. The assemblages finally pass into the groovs of a drum 17 where they are bisected by a rotary cutter 18 to form two mouthpiece cigarettes which roll down a ramp 20 on to a catcher band 21. The upper surface of the plate 16 is faced with silicone rubber to ensure rolling of the assemblages thereon by the band 15 and either the band 15 or. plate 16 is movable 'bodily to permit the removal of assemblages from the plate 16 when the machine is stopped. The uniting bands are formed from a web 28 of material which is gummed by a roller 29 and fed to the suction wheel 8 at a lower speed than that of the wheel. The individual bands are cut from the web 28 by a rotary cutter 32 with spring-loaded knives 33 operated by a hammer 34, the severed bands being carried away from the end of the web by the faster moving wheel 8. In the provisional Specification the deflecting mechanism comprises an air jet device similar to that descrbed in Specification 430,742 and Specifications 664,690, 770,173, 776,777, 776,975 [Group XXIX] and 778,043 are also referred to in the Provisional Specification.
