A uniting band is wrapped around an assembly of a double length stub and flanking cigarette rod lengths, partly by rolling the assembly on the band while the band is supported on a surface and partly by moving the assembly laterally towards an abutment extending from the surface to press an end portion of the band against the abutment and assembly. A stub may include filtering material, a hollow tube and/or tobacco differing from that of the cigarette rod lengths. Uniting bands B, cut by knives 4 from a web 2 forwarded on a suction drum 1, have their leading ends wrapped round assemblies A by relative movement between the assemblies A and slides 9, laterally of the assemblies and whilst they are not rotated, wrapping being continued by rolling of the assemblies rearwardly on the drum 1 due to their co-action with a ramp 14, and completed by relative movement between the assemblies and the slides 9 behind them, laterally of the assemblies, as they roll into contact with these slides. The knives 4 are mounted in a rotary member 3 and spring-urged radially outwardly to co-act with hard ends of the slides 9. Suction is applied to an annular chamber 5, partitioned by the slides 9, via holes in a fixed wall end 7 which extend round the chamber 5 only to the position where the slides 9 are radially projected from the drum 1 under the action of a stationary cam 11 to cause the relative movement for leading- end wrapping, at which position suction is consequently cut off. The assemblies A are deposited on the bands B by arms 12 of a rotating spider, as suction through ports 13 is cut off. The wrapped assemblies are delivered by a guide 15 to a conveyer 16 and are divided into individual composite cigarettes. In a modification, the slides are dispensed with, the assemblies merely picking up bands from the drum and the spider further transferring the assemblies and bands to means comprising a second drum, an endless chain conveyer or, according to the second Provisional Specification, an endless belt conveyer, and having fixed teeth which act in the manner of the slides as the assemblies and bands pass to and beneath a ramp as before. The spacing of the fixed teeth may be sufficient for completion of wrapping by rolling before the assemblies contact the teeth behind them, or for the teeth before them not to contact them at all. According to the first Provisional Specification, the uniting bands may be of cork or replaced by spraying of the assemblies with adhesive, the slides may have arcuate grooves which receive the assemblies, and the ramp and slides may be slotted to receive a rotary circular knife dividing the assemblies. According to the second Provisional Specification, the ramp may be replaced by a movable surface.
