[Class 130] Bands of cork &c. are wrapped around lengths of cigarette rod and mouthpiece portions, assembled in alignment, by means moving axially along the assemblage which is carried laterally by a conveyer. The mouthpiece portions may be formed by filter tips or by tobacco. As shown in Fig. 1, assemblages comprising pairs of cigarettes 1 with interposed filter tips are fed axially into a channelshaped member 3 which is carried by a cam 4a into engagement with arms 5a on an intermittently rotatable drum 5 which is locked during the stationary periods. Each assemblage is held upon its arm 5a by suction transmitted through holes 5d and is carried into contact with a pasted wrapping band 7 fed on a suction drum 8. A channel-shaped member 9 carried on slides 10 is moved towards the drum 5 to wrap the band 7 partly around the assemblage. After the suction in the drum 5 has been cut off by a member 5i the assemblage is transferred into a groove 11a in an intermittently rotatable drum 11 by suction exerted through bores 11b. The drum carries the assemblages beneath wrapping members 12a, 12b which are reciprocated along guides 12f by a crank and move in opposite directions over successive assemblages. Stops prevent axial movement of the assemblage during the operation of the wrapping members. The united assemblage is bisected by a knife 14 while being carried beneath a guide 13 by the drum 11 and the cigarettes are discharged on to a belt 15. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the lengths of cigarette rod and the filter tips are fed from hoppers into grooves 16a in a drum 16 in which they are retained by guides 17 until they are transferred to suction arms 5a on a continuously rotatable drum 5. A rotary member 18 having grooves 18a presses the wrapping band 7 partly around the assemblage before it is transferred and held by suction in a groove 19h in a block 19a mounted on a continuously rotating carrier 19. The wrapping means are formed by members 23b, 23c which are slid along cross-bars 24 by rollers 23a engaging cam grooves 25a in a stationary cylinder. At the discharge position the suction is cut off by a member 22a and the united assemblage is blown out of the groove 19h beneath a guide 27 on to the belt 15 by compressed air admitted through a pipe 26. In a modified construction the assemblages are carried by an endless chain structure and the movement of the wrapping devices is effected by a ramp.
