Abstract

457,033. Cigarette-making machines. EDWARDS, W. F. M., 1, Kempsford Gardens, Earl's Court, London. Feb. 19, 1935, No. 5369. [Class 130] Cigarettes or lengths of cigarette rod and filter tips or mouthpiece portions are brought into alignment and united by bands of paper or cork which are wrapped around the assemblage while it is being rolled between relatively movable surfaces. The filter tips may consist of a different kind of tobacco to that used in the cigarettes. In the construction shown, a pair of cigarettes and a double-length filter tip are fed from hoppers into grooves 2a in a drum 2, in which they are retained by a guide 3 and brought into contact by guides 3a. Camoperated fingers 6 discharge the assembled lengths from the grooves and press them on to a uniting band 4, which is held by suction on an intermittently rotated rolling drum 5. The band is wrapped around the assembly while it is rolled between the drum and a stationary element 8, which may be resiliently mounted and heated. The finished cigarette is prevented from being rotated, after rolling, by an endless belt 9 moved with and at the same speed as the drum and is finally delivered down a shoot 11. In modifications (1) single cigarettes and single filter tips are united, (2) double lengths of cigarette rod are united to single filter tips disposed at the ends, (3) several lengths of cigarette rod and filter tips are united together by the application of more than one uniting band, (4) the rolling means consists of an endless band passing over a flat table and a flat member or an endless band moving relatively to the other band, (5) the uniting bands are positioned on an intermittently moving endless belt and the assembled lengths are fed laterally on to the bands, which carries them axially to the rolling mechanism and (6) the lengths are applied at an intermediate position in the length of the bands and the rolling mechanism has an oscillating movement to effect part of the wrapping by rolling in one direction and the remainder by. rolling in the opposite direction.
