Abstract

424,491. Cigarette-making machines. WIX, A., 338, Goswell Road, EDWARDS, W. F. M., 1, Kempsford Gardens, Earl's Court, both in London, and MAY, R. F., 9, Manor Road, Potters Bar, Middlesex. July 14, 1933, No. 20018. [Class 130] Cigarettes and stub portions which form filter tips are united by an encircling band of cork &c. As shown in Fig. 1, a cigarette 4, a double - length stub 6, and a cigarette 4<a> are inserted through tubes a, b, c into a bore 1<a> in a drum 1, during successive periods of non-rotation; and the cigarettes are gripped by springs 1<c>. When the drum 1 is stationary a segmental gear 5 rotates rollers 2<a> carried by ferrules 2, which are rotatably mounted in the bores 1<a>, and wraps around the assembled cigarettes and stub portion a strip of cork 7 to which adhesive has been applied. A plunger d ejects the double cigarettes into a coaxial drum 10 in which the cigarettes are held by wires 10<b> and cut by a rotary cutter 11. In a modified construction, the cigarettes are retained by springs in rotatable sleeves in the drum and a non-rotatable member having an adjustable bore is provided between the sleeves, the non-rotatable member supporting the stub portion and the adjacent ends of the cigarettes, which may be inserted from opposite ends of the drum. When the sleeves are rotated, a strip of cork to which adhesive has been applied is fed through a slot in the non-rotatable member and wrapped around the assembled cigarettes and stub portion. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, a double-length cigarette, or a pair of cigarettes 4, 4a, is gripped within a rotatable sleeve 14 by a spring 14<b>. The cigarettes project into non-rotatable ferrules 15, which hold single stub portions 6<a>, 6b, and rollers 16 driven by pulleys 16<a> wrap strips of cork around the cigarettes and stub portions when the sleeve 14 is rotated by the gear 5. The cigarettes may be fed to the drum 1 so that their seams are in alignment with the seam of the encircling band. In modifications, (1) an intermittently movable endless chain is used instead of the drum ; and (2) the band of cork &c. is narrow and joins the stub portion to the cigarette without producing a cork-tipped cigarette.
