[Class 130] Filter tip or composite cigarettes are made by assembling lengths of filter tip or other filling or insertion in line with cigarettes or lengths of cigarette rod and uniting the assembled lengths while they are moving axially, e.g. on a belt 20 through a heated garniture 21 provided with seam-pressing rollers 21a, by bands of cork &c. tipping material. Preferably, the cigarettes are of double length and are supplied from a continuous-rod cigarette-making machine, which is driven by shafts 26, 35a and is provided with a cut-off knife 35, the cigarettes being fed in a continuous stream through a guide 1 to pressure rollers 2, 2a and 5, 5a which are rotated at a peripheral speed greater than the speed of feed of the cigarettes so that the latter are accelerated successively to form spaces to receive double-length filter tips from an intermittently rotatable disc 4 disposed between the rollers 2, 5, as shown. The disc 4 is provided with a circumferentially-arranged series of longitudinal bores 4a which locate the tips and are brought into alignment successively with the cigarettes, the tips being ejected from the bores 4a by passage of the cigarettes therethrough. The assembly, comprising alternate cigarettes and tips, is then led through a garniture 7 and tubular guide 8 to the wrapping garniture 21 where the tipping material is applied, and the continuous composite rod thus formed then travels past a knife 31 which is driven from the main shaft 26 through a differential gear 33 and is timed to cut the double lengths of cigarettes and tips to produce either cigarettes with a filter tip at one end or else cigarettes with a filter tip at an intermediate point in their length. Axial movement of the cigarettes &c. through the garniture 7 is effected by a belt 3 which passes over the rollers 2, 5 and a driving roller 11, and preferably a feed roller 8<a>, having a peripheral speed equal to the speed of the wrapping belt 20 but less than that of the belt 3, is associated with the tubular guide 8 to cause the cigarette &c. lengths delivered from the belt 3 to slow down and abut before passing to the belt 20. The cork tipping material 14 in a continuous strip is fed by a roller 14d from a supply spool 14<a> to a perforated belt 15 which runs past a gum-moistening roller 16 and over a suction box 15<c> and conveys the cork strip past a rotary knife 22 to the belt 20 which passes over a suction roller 19 and conveys lengths of the strip to the garniture 21, the roller 14d being driven intermittently or at a peripheral speed less than that of the roller 19 so as to space correctly the said cork lengths. The filter tips, which are preferably enclosed in tubes or wrappers, may be fed to the disc 4 from a pair of hoppers 43, 44 by intermittently rotatable transfer drums 41, 42, one on each side of the disc, the drums being formed with longitudinal channels 41<a>, 42a for the reception of the tips and plungers 50, 51 being located near the drums for ejecting the tips when in alignment with the bores 4a of said disc. The tips may be of multiple length originally, being cut to the required length by cutters 48 while located in the grooves of the disc 4. A tubular guide 36 may be located between the cigarettemaking machine and the guide 1 and provided with means, including a cam 39, for throwing-in the feed of cigarettes thereto in timed relation with the cut-off knife 35.
