Abstract

741,416. Tobacco smoke filters; cigarettemaking machines. GAMBLE, H. March 23, 1953 [Dec. 21, 1951], No. 29982/51. Class 130. Double-length composite filter elements for tobacco pipes, cigars and mouthpiece cigarettes comprise, in axial alignment but, optionally, spaced apart, a central double-length filter plug, of crepe paper with or without cotton wool or cellulose wadding, and flanking single-length filter components which may be wads of cotton wool with or without a pressed, starched and baked cellulose outer layer, or plastic, cardboard, glass &c. tubes containing either compressed cotton wool or nicotine-absorbing crystals of a suitable chemical salt. The two components may be fixed to the plug by enclosing all three in a paper tube or, in the case of cotton wool wads, by additionally or alternatively glueing them to the plug or piercing them axially to drive strands thereof into the plug. The filter elements may be assembled singly or in multiples with appropriate lengths of cigarette rod to form when appropriately severed two, or a multiple of two, mouthpiece cigarettes, the elements and rod lengths being first joined by cork or paper bands encircling each element and the adjacent ends of adjoining rod lengths. Alternatively, the filter elements may be incorporated into the rods of continuous-rod machines either before or after the rods are wrapped, encircling bands being used as before in the latter case. The filter elements may themselves be manufactured on the continuous rod principle, double-length filter plugs 1, Fig. 14, and filter wads 3 as previously specified but also of double length being fed from magazines 46, 47 by a grooved drum 48 on to a travelling paper web 49 which is folded and glued in a garniture 50 about the rod of alternate plugs and wads which is then finally severed by a knife 51 midway along each wad. A roller 52 rotating with a higher operative surface speed than that of the web 49 causes acceleration of the plugs and slight compression of the wads between them. The plugs may be formed in situ by pressing or rolling crepe paper, or may be cut from a rod, as may the wads. In Fig. 11, double-length plugs, cut from a rod 27 by an oscillating disc knife 29 after insertion into circumferentially spaced holes 24 in an intermittently rotated disc 21 at one station thereof, are gummed at a second station on each end by pads or by rollers 30 which act to centralise the plugs in the disc, whilst at a third station a pusher 32 passes through a hole 24 and aligned holes 23 in intermittently rotated discs 20, 22 to consolidate and eject to a stacker or assembly machine as a completed filter element a plug 1 and two single-length wads 3 previously inserted in the holes 23 at another station of the discs 20, 22. The plug and wads may be joined only by piercing in the manner mentioned above when the three discs may be co-axial. Where a spaced-apart plug and wads are used, the spaces may remain empty or be filled with nicotineabsorbing crystals. In Fig. 19, fluted portions 62 of an intermittently rotated drum receive in each flute such crystals from shoots 66 after a double-length plug has been inserted in an aligned hole 64 and before or after single-length wads are inserted each in an aligned hole 65. Shrouds 67 retain the crystals in the flutes until each line of holes and flutes reaches a member 72 internally recessed to present with the flutes a circular cross-section when a pusher ejects the contents of the line through a spoon into a paper or cardboard tube. The holes 64, 65 may be replaced by appropriately shrouded flutes, permitting lateral feeding of plugs and wads to the drum. Specifications 430,817, 487,069, 687,878 and 741,429 are referred to.
