Abstract

424,055. Cigarette-making machines. WIX, A., 338, Goswell Road, London, and MAY, R. F., 9, Manor Road, Potters Bar, Middlesex. July 14, 1933, No. 20020. [Class 130] Cigarettes are provided with tubular mouthpieces formed by the application of a band of paper or cork, and a filter tip is thereafter inserted into the mouthpiece. Cigarettes 2 are fed through a guide 7 alternately to two bores 5<a> in an oscillatable member 5, and ejected by plungers 6, 6<a> into sleeves 1<a> in intermittently rotatable drums 1, and are held with one end projecting from the sleeves by springs 1<c>. A band 3 of paper or cork, coated with adhesive, is fed by rollers 8 and a guide 9, through a slot 4<a> into a device 4 and wrapped around the cigarette to provide a tubular mouthpiece, either by a group of rollers rotatable relative to the cigarette, or by rotating the sleeve. The cigarettes may be fed into the guide 7 from a continuous-rod machine so that the seams of the mouthpiece and the paper case are in alignment. Filter tips 10 are inserted from a forming-device 11 into the mouthpieces, which abut against shoulders 4b. An endless chain may be used instead of the drum 1. In a modified construction, the drum is provided with fixed sleeves and each band of paper &c. is applied by a roller or group of rollers rotatable about the axis of the cigarette.
