Mouthpieces M travelling on a grooved drum 1 for association on a grooved drum 2 with cigarettes, cigarillos or other tobacco rod articles Z are retained by springs 5 on a segmental member 4, each assembly of aligned mouthpieces and cigarettes, &c., M, Z, e.g. a double-length filter mouthpiece between two cigarettes, being retained on the drum 2, and on a further drum 3 to which it is transferred, by guides 6, 7 which overlap at the transfer point, similar guides being used alternatively or in addition where cigarettes, &c. are transferred from another drum (not shown) to the drum 2. Uniting of the assembly by a connecting band is effected on the drum 3.
