[Class 99 (ii)] A tube for use in the manufacture of mouthpiece cigarettes is formed from a paper &c. strip 10 folded into tubular form, its longitudinal edges being caused to abut and being held together by an inner covering strip 9 which is preferably also of tubular form and is secured to the tube by adhesive. The strip 9 is fed from a reel 11 through a tapering garniture 15, in which it is folded, to a second garniture 22 in which the strip 10 from a reel 12 is folded into tubular form, the strip 10 being coated with adhesive by a roller 17 and a tube 23 being located within the garniture 22 to prevent the two strips contacting. The two strips then pass to a guide passage 24 where the covering strip is permitted to expand and adhere to the tube formed by the outer strip, pressure being preferably applied to the covering strip by a resilient member 25, comprising a conical tube with slits 26, which is carried by a rod 16 supported by a bracket 160. The continuous tube thus formed is then partly dried by a heater 28 and finally conveyed by an endless band 27 through a second heater 128 to cutting mechanism 29 ; the latter severs the tube into short lengths which are collected on a band 32.
