Cigars; cigarettes; cigarette-making machines; tobacco pipes.-Filter wads for cigars, cigarettes, cigar or cigarette holders or tobacco pipes are constructed of material comprising superposed layers of corrugated or crepe paper, having interposed layers of cotton or other cellulose fibres. In the Figure the filtering material in the form of a ribbon 1 is wound into a roll 2, the constituent layers of the ribbon being fastened together by sewing or by adhesive strips 4 attached radially to the roll. the ribbon 1 is fed forward intermittently by rollers 5 and is divided into lengths by shears 6, each length being rolled spirally into a filter wad in a nest of corrugated rollers 7. The nest is in two parts, the upper part being rotatable about a shaft 10 by a lever 19. The rollers 7 are driven from the shaft 10 by pinions 11, 12, 12<1> the pinion 11 being slidably connected with the shaft 10 in order to permit axial displacement of the nest. The lower roller on the open side of the nest is screened by a curved plate 21. The filter-wad, when rolled, is transferred axially to a reciprocating receiving tube by a reciprocating plunger passing through a hollow shaft driving the shaft 10. An unfilled cigarette tube or a tubular paper wrapper for the wad is placed on the receiving tube and is pushed therefrom, with the wad inside, by a pivoted stop during the transfer of the next wad thereto. The wad may be impregnated with nicotine-eliminating substances or, when used in cigarettes, may be impregnated with a fire-proofing substance such as sodium silicate at its inner end and with a water-proofing substance such as paraffin wax at its outer end. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not restricted to the use of crepe or corrugated paper for the filter wads or to the provision of interposed cellulose or cotton fibres. It also states that the ribbon 1 may be perforated and that the transferring plunger may be connected with its actuating means bv a spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
