Mouthpieces cut from a continuous rod are axially forwarded by a wheel 3 into successive flutes of a drum 4 alternate flutes of which have stop members so that successive pairs of mouthpieces on the drum are spaced apart axially by a little more than the length of double-length cigarettes delivered by swinging arms 7 from a drum 6 into the flutes containing lagging members of mouthpiece pairs, the leading members of which are subsequently brought into alignment with the cigarettes and lagging members by a fixed countersurface 11 rolling them from the dotted line position 13 to the solid line position 12 on a drum 9 to which they are all transferred. The mouthpieces are then closed up on the cigarettes by end guides (not shown) and the resulting assemblies are passed by drums 14, 15 to a rolling passage 16, 17 in which each of them is united by a pair of narrow gummed strips 20, the united assemblies passing via conveyers 21, 22, 24 to a drum 25 along the flutes of which they are blown by an air jet to a position in which they are each subdivided into two mouthpiece cigarettes for delivery in two separated rows to a conveyer band which may have means for turning the cigarettes of one row end-for-end. The mouthpiece rod is made from a stiff paper strip coated with heat-sealing adhesive on to which double-length stubs are placed at intervals before the strip is formed into a lapped tube which is cut at and between the stubs so that each mouthpiece contains a single-length stub at the end which is eventually presented to a double-length cigarette. The Provisional Specification describes apparatus in which mouthpieces cut from a similar rod have the stubs, which are retained by a slow-drying adhesive or by friction only, pushed along them by a plunger to allow insertion of a cigarette which is retained by adhesive supplied by ducts in the plunger. Either the cigarette or the mouthpiece may be moved to effect insertion; if the latter, two mouthpieces may be simultaneously applied to the ends of a double-length cigarette which is subsequently divided into two mouthpieces cigarettes.
