768,489. Cigarettes and cigar-making machines. KÍRBER, K. April 5, 1955 [April 7, 1954; Jan. 4, 1955], No. 9898/55. Class 130 A sheet 3 of connecter material is passed over a gumming roller 6 on to a suction drum 10 on which the sheet is cut into separate connecter strips 3a which are delivered by the drum 10 on to cigarette and mouthpiece assemblages G carried in grooves on a drum 1 for subsequent wrapping around the assemblages to connect the mouthpieces to the cigarettes and the gumming roller 6 is arranged to rotate at a lower speed than the drum 10. The sheet 3 is fed positively from a supply reel 2 by a roller 13 co-operating with a guide roller 4 and rotating at a lower speed than the roller 6, the roller 13 being carried by a spring-loaded frame 14 pivoted at 15 and being replaceable by a roller of different diameter to vary the size of the strips 3a. The roller 6 is coated with gum by a roller 7 carried by the gum container 8 which is pivoted at 8a and loaded by a spring 8b which is adjustable to vary the thickness of the gum on the roller 6. The end of the sheet 3 slips on the drum 10 due to the peripheral speed of the drum 10 being greater than the speed of the sheet 3, whereby the strips 3a, after being cut from the sheet 3 by a rotary cutter 12, travel with the drum 10 and become spaced apart. The device is also applicable to the formation of cheroots or cigarillos with filter mouthpieces.
