392,266. Cigarette-making machines. IMPERIAL TOBACCO CO. (OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND), Ltd., East Street, Bedminster, and DOLMAN, H. J., Rondray, Church Road, Staple Hill, both in Bristol. Dec. 23, 1931, No. 35520. [Class 130.] Short cigarettes and stub portions are united by an encircling band of cork &c. From a partitioned hopper two cigarettes and an intervening stub fall into aligned pockets in an auxiliary roller 60 from which they are delivered into one of the pockets in the periphery of a main drum 1. Each pocket contains hinged carrier members supported in end bearings and rotated as the drum advances by the engagement of a pinion 19 with a fixed rack 21. A strip of cork &c. supplied with adhesive by a pasting mechanism 78 is severed by a cutter 75 and passes on to the drum where it is retained by suction exerted through passages 32, 33. Both in the auxiliary roller and in the main drum cams formed on the adjacent framing press the cigarette ends against the stubs. As the cork reaches the pocket preceding that in which the cigarettes and stubs are deposited, projections 74 on a drum 73 depress the cork into the base of the pocket. Beyond the point of deposition the engagement of the pinion 19 and rack 21 cause rotation of the carrier, rolling the paper around the cigarette and stub. A heater 71 dries the adhesive as the edges are superposed. Masks 36 interrupt the suction through the passages 32, and after the double cigarette has been cut across by a knife 84, fingers 86 detach the cigarettes which are removed on a belt 87. In a modification the drum may oscillate instead of rotating, the cigarettes and stubs being fed to the middle of the enveloping strip instead of to the end.
