[Class 130] In a continuousrod machine, the tobacco belt 3 is carried around rollers 5,7, 6 mounted on a reciprocatable carriage 5a and arranged to provide a gap between two runs of the belt, the continuous tobacco filler 4 being severed without interruption of its continuous movement, while passing over the gap, by a cutter 9 mounted on the carriage 5<a>. The rollers 5, 6 are spaced apart in the direction of the length of the belt 3, and the roller 7 is disposed centrally below the gap between the rollers 5, 6. The tobacco filler 4 may be guided or supported over the gap by a trough-like member 16, Fig. 4, slotted at 17 for the passage of the cutter 9. The cut lengths of tobacco are delivered into a closed tubular trough 10 interrupted to accommodate an intermittently rotatable drum 11 into which single or double length filter tips are inserted by a supply device 12. An accelerating-device 13, consisting of an endless conveyer with conical projections 14, is alternately raised and lowered by cam means such as that described in Specification 440,507, and serves to accelerate each tobacco length in turn to form spaces between them. Each length ejects a filter tip from the drum 11, and the alternate lengths of tobacco and filter tips are wrapped in a paper strip 15 to form a continuous rod.
