447,779. Cigarette-making machines. LERNER, F., 28, Burgerspitalgasse, Vienna. Dec. 7, 1934, No. 35181. [Class 130] In a machine for making filter-tip cigarettes in which a continuous tobacco filler is formed and cut into sections between which filter-tips are inserted and the composite filling is formed into a continuous cigarette rod, the distance between the cigarette rod and the filler is alternately increased and decreased by periodically varying the relative speeds of the cigarette rod and the tobacco filler. The tobacco is fed on a tape 3 through a channelshaped passage 2, pressed by a wheel 4 and cut by a knife 6 as it issues from a tube 5. The sections are deposited on a paper strip 7 which is carried by a tape 9 through a passage 8. Needles 17 on an endless belt 16 transfer filter-tips 12 from a slotted tube 19 into the gaps between the sections and the tips are detached when the edges of the tape 9 are wrapped around the rod. Either or both of the tapes 3, 9 are driven at periodically varying speeds through elliptic or eccentric gears from a common shaft and the filter tip is deposited when the speed of the tape 9 is a maximum or the speed of the filler a minimum. The cigarette rod preferably consists of double length tobacco fillers and filter tips which are bisected simultaneously by knives 13, 14. In modifications, the filter tips are supplied by moving grippers or suction means or by a stationary device.
