[Class 130] In a machine for making cigarettes provided with filter plugs or mouthpieces in which aligned plugs and cigarettes are delivered axially on to a web of wrapping material which is folded and secured around them to form a continuous rod which is severed by cutting mechanism, means are provided to engage with the end faces of the plugs or cigarettes after they have been delivered to the wrapping material to position them with respect to the cutting mechanism. Double length cigarettes are fed one at a time from a hopper 6 on to an endless belt 11 and spaces, into which double-length plugs are fed from a hopper 13, are formed by a rotating member 12. The cigarettes and plugs are delivered over a fluted bridgepiece 16 or between side guides on to a web 17 of wrapping material, by pushers 14 on a conveyer 15 running at the same speed as the belt 11 and faster than the web 17. Rollers 20 running on a guide rail 19 move the pushers 14 away from the cigarettes and plugs just before they are engaged by spring-urged fingers 23 which pass through apertures 22 in a drum 21, and position the cigarettes and plugs on the web 17. The fingers are pivoted on a flange within the drum and contact with a stationary cam 24 which is so shaped that the driving face of each finger remains parallel with the end face of a cigarette or plug so long as it is in engagement therewith. After the cigarettes and plugs have been positioned on the web, the loaded web is moved by an endless band 25 through folding mechanism 26 to pasting mechanism which supplies sufficient adhesive to secure the overlapping edges of the web and to secure the plugs and cigarettes to the web. The web may be supplied with cork tips by tipping mechanism 34. In modified constructions, (a) the adhesive is applied to the web before the cigarettes and plugs are located on it, and (b) the cigarettes and plugs are not secured to the web ; a rotating knife 33, Fig. 3, slits the wrappers of the cigarettes and the plugs before they are enclosed in the wrapping web 17. A plug may be constituted by a filter, by a mouthpiece which may be empty or entirely or partly filled with filtering or flavouring material, by a composite mouthpiece formed in part by a length of wrapped cigarette rod and in part by a length of filtering or flavouring material or by a mouthpiece comprising a length of tobacco filler in a wrapper, the tobacco being of a different kind from that in a cigarette. Specifications 430,742 and 430,817 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the plugs and cigarettes may be placed on a porous band on which lengths of filter tip material are held at spaced intervals by suction. The cigarettes and stubs may be aligned by a plunger.
