[Class 130], In a continuous-rod machine, tobacco showered on to a conveyer travelling at the speed of the cigarette rod is subjected to an axial compacting action while confined between the conveyer and a tobacco engaging element spaced from the conveyer and travelling in the same direction but at a greater speed. As shown in Fig. 2, a picker roller 26, co-operating with a shroud 27, removes tobacco from a feed drum 22 and projects the stem portions S into a detachable receptacle 28 having an adjustable rear wall 29. The lighter portions T<11> fall on to a belt 31 and are showered down a shoot 11 on to an endless belt 13 which passes around a groove in a forming wheel 16 mounted on a shaft 17 at one end of the shoot. A roller 36, Fig. 1, prevents escape of tobacco from the shoot. The tobacco is confined in the groove by a belt 50 which feeds the paper web P and passes over and drives flanged wheels 37 loosely mounted on the shaft. The shaft 17 and belt 31 are driven at a faster speed than the belt 50 and paper strip to effect an axial compression of the tobacco filler, and the speed of the shaft 17 is controlled by a regulator 46 which adjusts ' the speed of an electric motor. As the belt 31 leaves the wheel 16 a pair of grooved compressing wheels 71 geared together turn its edges inwardly to impart-an oval cross-section to the filler. A second pair of grooved compressing wheels 76 geared together compact the rod to a circular cross-section before it is fed to the rodforming mechanism .71a. The peripheral speed of the wheels 71, 76 is equal to the linear speed fo the belt 50.
