[Class 130.1 To compress a forwardly moving stream of tobacco to approximately the cross section of the core in a finished cigarette, the shoot 19 of a continuous rod cigarette-making machine receives a tobacco stream T and deposits it on the upper runs of belts 10, 15, which form a tapering pathway thus compressing the tobacco to the approximate cross section of the rod and delivering it to the continuously moving paper strip P at a speed equal to that of the strip. The tobacco is pressed on to the paper by a plate 29 when it enters the tongue 28<1> of the rod former and the paper P is fed by an adjustable guide 26 on to a tape 27 which feeds it beneath the belt 10. Scrapers 36 remove dust or tobacco which may collect on the belts 10, 15.
