Abstract

1,003,000. Removing filter tips from defective cigarettes. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. May 11, 1962, No. 18316/62. Heading A2C. A method of removing filter tips from cigarettes includes aligning and gripping the cigarettes in side by side relationship with their tipped ends facing in one and the same direction, transversely moving the gripped aligned cigarettes and changing the motion of the filter tip in a direction parallel to the direction of said cigarettes. Tipped cigarettes in trays stacked on a platform 2 are pushed into a hopper 4 from which they flow downwardly past driven rollers 12, 14 into a converging channel 11 formed by two endless belts 24, 26, each running at the same speed and in the direction shown by the arrows (Fig. 1), which progressively grip the cigarettes. A rotating paddle-like member 40 engages and knocks the tips off the cigarettes. The tips then pass down a shoot 30 into a rotating sieve 32 which removes any remaining tobacco particles. The de-tipped cigarettes 37 pass to a conveyer 38. The rollers 12 may be replaced by fixed guide plates. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the tips are removed by a rotating knife.
