Abstract

416,688. Separating solid materials. SNOW, W. H., 29, Park Range, Victoria Park, Manchester. April 21, 1933, No. 11652. [Classes 82 (ii) and 117.] Relates to apparatus of the type comprising two endless belts arranged to form a V-shaped trough the sides of which diverge in the direction of movement of the belts as described in Specification 312,020, [Class 117], and consists in (1) a device for feeding the material in bulk into the trough from above, (2) in vibrating the guiding supports of the belts and (3) in forming the supports of two or more divergent planes or a combination of plane and curved surfaces. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the supporting surfaces 12 are pivotally mounted at their widely spaced ends and are vibrated by a bracket 16 engaged by a ratchet wheel 17 on the shaft of the belt roller 4. Alternatively, the usual screen-vibrating devices such as airpercussion mechanisms, electromagnetic devices, revolving unbalanced masses &c. may be used. The feeding device comprises a tray 18, Fig. 1, hinged to one of the supports at 19 and supported by an adjustable link 20. The trough may be enclosed by a cover 14 and the separating space may be connected to a device for creating a current of air or liquid in a direction contrary to the direction of movement of the belts for the purpose of assisting the separation and removing dust &c. In an alternative form of apparatus, the material may be fed into the trough in the fluid stream. For retaining the belts in position flanges are provided on the lower edges of the supporting plates, or inclined guide pulleys may be used. The spacing between the plates is adjustable. Multiplex apparatus is described comprising three or more belts arranged side by side, or two belts running one inside the other either on two sets of pulleys or on the same pulleys. In the latter arrangement, the adjacent parts of the belt 60, Fig. 13, are separated by spacing members 58, 59 to form the grading opening.
