My invention relates broadly to separating or classifying machines and more particularly to a construction of separating or classifying machine having a plurality of sets of rollers adjustable in position for grading material to different required sizes.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a construction of separating or classifying machine in which a plurality of longitudinally extending roller members are arranged in a. supporting frame with means for varying the spacial relation of the roller members in both a lateral and vertical direction for selecting a required spacial relation for the passage of material'of selected sizes therebetween.
Another object of my invention is to provide a separating or classifying machine including a plurality of longitudinally extending roller members in which roller members of different sizes are arranged in spaced parallel relationship with means for adjusting the spacial relationship of the rollers for determining the size of the material which is subjected to the classifying process.
till another object of my invention is to provide a construction of separating or classifying machine having a frame with longitudinally extending rollers journaled therein with means for adjusting alternate ones of said roller members vertically with respect to stationary roller members journaled in the frame.
A further object of my invention is to provide a separating or classifying machine having a plurality of super-imposed frame members in which longitudinally extending rollers are journaled, the frame members being arranged to be adjusted vertically with respect to each other for in'terposing alternate rollers between other rollers of the frame for varying the longitudinally eX- tending gaps between the rollers and thus determining the size of the material which may be passed through the rollers and discharged at the end of the classifying machine.
My invention will be more fully under stood from the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the separating or classifying machine of my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional-view taken through the separating or classifying machine of Fig. 1 along line 2-2 thereof;

Fig. 3 is a lateral cross sectional view along line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing rollers of smaller diameter adjusted to a position between the rollers of larger diameter for selectively regulating thespacial relation of the rollers and governing, the size of the material which may be passed between the rollers.
Referring to the drawings in more detail, the classifying machine consists of side frame members 1 secured by suitable means such as bolt members 4 to rear bearing carrier 2 and front bearing carrier 3. A laterally extending casing 5 is provided at one end of the coal separating machine forming a dirt proof housing for the shaft 6 journaled in the frame of the coal separator. The shaft 6 has a drive pulley 7 thereon which is driven by means of belt 8. Gears 9 are journaled on the shaft 6 co-operating with sets of bevel gears 10 and 29. A plurality of rotatable shaft members 11 are journaled in bearings 12 and 13 mounted in the bearing carriers 2 and 3. The shaft members 11 carry rollers 14 which extend along the bottom of'the hopper forming a part of the separating machine. I arrange a plurality of smaller rollers 15 intermediate the larger rollers 14, the smaller rollers 15 being carried by shafts '24: which are journaled in bearings 22 and 23 mounted up on an independent frame. The independent frame consists of longitudinally extending side frames 19 connected in opposite ends by laterally extending frame members 20. Upwardly protruding arms18 are provided adjacent opposite corners of the independent frame structure and these cooperate with bolt members 16 through slots 17 in the side frames 1 to enable the independent frame structure to be adjusted vertically with respect to the main frame structure 123. The laterally extending frame members 20 provide adjustable mounts 21 for the sets of bearings 22 and 23 and enable the spacial relation of shaft members 24 to be selected and set to a desired position. The extremities of the shaft members 24 are connected through universal joints 25 and loose coupling 26 with stub shafts 27 journaled in bearings 28. The stub shafts carry the bevel gears 29 which mesh with the gears 9 on the shaft 6. A hopper is provided over the rollers as defined by side plates 31 and chute for directing the material to be separated in a path of travel over the rollers. The material to be separated is dumped upon the chute 30 and gravitates over the sets of rollers which are normally positioned in an inclined plane. Material of a predetermined size passes between the rollers, while material of larger size is discharged at the end of the separating apparatus.
I have found the apparatus of my inven tion particularly suitable in the separation of coal, but it will be understood that the machine may be used for various purposes and that no limitations upon the use of the invention are intended. It will also be understood that other modifications of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a plurality of sets of longitudinally extending rollers, separate sets of bearings for alternate rollers, and means for adjusting the position of said bearings laterally with respect to each other and independent means for elevating or lowering one set of rollers with respect to the other set of rollers.
2. In a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a plurality of longitudinally extending rollers of two different sizes, the rollers of one size being alternately po sitioned with respect to the rollers of the other size, and means for adjusting the relative lateral and vertical positions between said sets of rollers.
3. In a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a frame, a drive shaft journaled laterally with respect to said frame, a plurality of rollers journaled longitudinally in said frame and rotated by said drive shaft, each of said rollers being laterally adjustable in said frame, an auxiliary frame member adjustably positioned within said aforementioned frame member, a plurality of longitudinally extending rollers journaled in said auxiliary frame member, said plurality of rollers being arranged to be moved in a vertical plane to Various posaid rollers may be varied by adjusting said independent frame structure with respect to said main frame structure, each of said rollers being independently adjustable laterally of said frame structures.
a In a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a main frame structure, a plurality of rollers journaled longitudinally in said main frame structure, an auxiliary frame structure adjustably mounted with respect to said main frame structure, and carrying a plurality of longitudinally journaled rollers arranged to be interposed between the rollers journaled in said main frame structure for varying the spacial relation between said rollers, a rotatable drive shaft, a direct connection interposed between said shaft and the rollers on said auxiliary main structure and flexible connections between said shaft and rollers on said auxiliary frame structure.
6. in a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a main frame structure, a plurality of rollers journaled longitudinally in said main frame structure, an auxiliary frame structure, a plurality of rollers journaled longitudinally in said auxiliary frame-structure and in positions substantially parallel with the axes of said aforementioned rollers, means for adjusting said auxiliary frame structure in a vertical plane with respect to said main frame structure for varying the vertical spacial relation between said rollers and independent means for adjusting the lateral relation between said rollers.
7. In a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a main frame structure, a plurality of rollers journaled longitudinally in said main frame structure, an auxiliary frame structure, a plurality of longitudinally extending rollers journaled in said auxiliary frame structure and in positions alternating with the positions of the longitudinally extending rollers in said main frame structure, means for adjusting said auxiliary frame structure with respect to said main frame structure for varying the spacial relation between said rollers for determining the size of material capable of passing between said classifying machine iii) rat
and independent means for varying the lateral spacial relation between said rollers in selected positions.
8. in a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a main frame structure, a plurality of rollers jo'urnaled longitudinally in said main frame structure, an aux iliary frame structure, a plurality of roller members adjustably positioned in said auxiliary frame structure and variable in lateral spacial relation and each ofiset with respect to the rollers journaled in said main frame structure, and means for adjusting the position ofsaid auxiliary frame structure with respect to said main frame structure in a vertical plane for varying the spacial relation between said rollers and determining the size of the material which may be passed between said rollers.
9. In a separating or classifying machine, the combination of a main frame structure,
a plurality of rollers journaled longitudinally in said main frame structure, an auxiliary frame structure, a plurality of rollers frame structure in positions intermediate the rollers journaled in said main frame structure, a drive shaft carried by said main frame structure forimparting rotary movement to each of said rollers, flexible driving connections between said drive shaft and the rollers journaled in said auxiliary frame structure, whereby all of said rollers may be driven simultaneously, and means for adj usting said auxiliary frame structure with respect to said main frame structure for varying the spacial relation between said rollers for determining the size of material which may be passed between said rollers during the classifying process.
