818,806. Cigarette-making machines. KÍRBER, K. June 18, 1957 [July 20, 1956], No. 19150/57. Class 130. In a continuous-rod machine in which a tobacco stream is reversed in direction by being carried upwardly between a grooved feed wheel 1 and an endless belt 4, choking of the stream where it joins and leaves the wheel is prevented by local enlargement of the tobacco feed duct in the direction of flow. On joining the wheel, the stream is first compacted under a steel belt 8, Fig. 2, by downward inclination of the belt or tapering of the feed duct width, and on leaving the belt 8 the duct width increases up to the tip of a wheel guide-in finger 14 where the duct cross-section equals that of the wheel groove. On leaving the wheel, the duct width increases from the tip of a wheel groove scraper 15, Fig. 4, until a roller 9 feeding in a cigarette paper wrapper is reached, and then decreases up to a rod-former tongue 10 where the duct cross-section corresponds to that of the tongue. A steel belt may be provided to assist compaction of the tobacco stream to this cross-section. A corrugated or spiked brushing roller 16, scraper 18 and a suction dust extractor 17 are provided for the belt 4. The operative speeds of the belts 4, 8, the wheel 1 and a belt 12 carrying the paper wrapper through rod-forming means are individually variable and are normally equal although the speeds of the belt 4 and wheel 1 may be unequal.
