A flow of discrete fibres of tobacco trimmed by a cutter 37, Fig. 19, from a stream carried in a peripheral groove of a wheel 19 is delivered by a shoot 58 to the spiked or carded periphery 192, Fig. 20, of a more slowly moving wheel 193 and returned by a picker wheel 59 and deflector 61 to the stream upstream of the trimming point but downstream of the stream-forming distributer 15 The wheel 19 delivers the stream from the stream-forming belt 1 to the paper 23 of cigarette rod-forming means. Suction from stationary chambers 63 acts through the perforated groove base 48 over all the arc 32-33 except the portion 35 adjacent the trimming point, and is replaced by compressed air over the arc 34 to assist delivery from the wheel 19. Alternatively, a bridge or scraper 55 is provided on an overhead belt perforated for suction therethrough. The cutter 37 co-acts with a pair of meshing star wheels 36 presenting tobacco thereto. Modifications. The wheel 192 may be dispensed with, the trimmed-off tobacco being returned to the opposite periphery of the wheel 19 by a pneumatic conveyer, or to the belt 1 by a carded belt conveyer, or, where an obliquely disposed carded roller or belt conveyer acting on the stream via the induced air current is used in place of the cutter 37, to a second peripheral suction groove of the wheel 19 for transfer therefrom to the belt 1 or the first groove by a deflector located diametrically opposite the roller or conveyer. Fig. 5 shows tobacco trimmed from the stream on the belt 1 and returned thereto upstream of the distributer 15 by a pneumatic conveyer 27. Additional tobacco increments to form dense-end cigarettes may be added to the stream after the trimming point, and tobacco for such increments may be taken from the trimmed-off tobacco or from an independent distributer.
