[Also in Division B2] In a continuous rod machine wherein surplus tobacco is removed from the tobacco stream by a trimmer 5, Fig. 1, means are provided to feed shorts to the tobacco stream so that the part of the stream on which the trimmer operates is composed mainly of shorts. The tobacco stream is formed on a perforated conveyer belt 1 by suction means drawing the tobacco up through a passage 3 as described in Specification 895,733. The tobacco is fed into the channel 3 from a hopper 6 provided with carding rollers 7, 8, and a picker roller 10, Fig. 2. The tobacco is fed from a container 12 by conveyers 13, 14; the shorts fall out at the gap between the conveyers and are collected in a trough 20. The long tobacco is carried upwardly by conveyer 14 and drops into a shoot 9 in hopper 6 provided with guide vanes 22, Fig. 3, which direct it to the right hand side of the carding wheel 7. The shorts are fed along trough 20 by a worm wheel 21 and are delivered to the left hand side of wheel 7, whereby in the channel 3 the long tobacco remains to the right of line B-B and is picked up first by the conveyer 1 whereas the shorts remain to the left of the line B-B and are deposited upon the long tobacco already on the conveyer so that the surplus tobacco removed by the trimmer 5 consists mainly of shorts which are returned to the hopper 6 by vibrating conveyers 25, 26, an oblique slot 26a, Fig. 6, ensuring that the returned shorts are distributed evenly over the carding roller 7. In a modification, Fig. 4, the tobacco is removed from container 12 by an endless belt 14 and is dropped on to a set of rotating discs 33 which deliver the long tobacco into a shoot 31 whilst the short tobacco falls between the discs into a second shoot 32. Guide vanes 37, 36, in the shoots deliver the long tobacco to the right hand side of the line B-B, Fig. 1, and the shorts to the left hand side so that the filler is built up in the same manner as in Fig. 1.
