In a dense-end cigarette machine a tobacco stream is fed by a conveyer 2, Fig. 1, on to a grooved rotary wheel 3 and excess tobacco removed by a trimmer 10 is fed to a separating device 15 which separates out the shorts and returns them to the stream on conveyer 2, the remaining long shreds being delivered intermittently in batches on to the tobacco stream delivered from the wheel 3 on to the tape 13 of a rod-forming mechanism 14. The trimmed tobacco is delivered through a shoot 11, Fig. 2, into a second grooved wheel 6 coaxial with, and rotating at a slower speed than, the wheel 3. From the wheel 6 the trimmed tobacco is carried by a conveyer 18 to the separator 15 comprising a vibrating sieve through which the shorts fall into a shoot 17 leading back to the conveyer 2. The remaining long shreds are delivered into a hopper 20 with a closure flap 21 opened intermittently by a link 22 from a rotating member 23 which consolidates the stream at the points at which it is augmented by the batches of shreds from the hopper 20. In a modification, Fig. 4, the trimmed tobacco enters a shoot 26 with a sieve 27 so that the shorts drop directly through a branch 28 on to the wheel 6 for return to the conveyer 2 and the longer shreds pass down a shoot 29 on to a belt 32 which delivers them into a hopper with a rotating vaned wheel which delivers the shreds in batches on to the tobacco stream in the rod-forming mechanism.
