Abstract

902,066. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Aug. 6, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 25262/58. Class 130. [Also in Group I] In a continuous rod cigarette-making machine a continuous stream 8 of small pieces of tobacco leaf is fed pneumatically along a duct 14 to a device 16 which separates the tobacco, e.g. by centrifugal force, from the air stream and forms it into a continuous compact stream which is severed by a cutting device 24 into elongated shreds of tobacco and then formed into a continuous rod in the mechanism 32. In Fig. 1, the tobacco is conveyed by an air stream set up by a suction pump 40 and is passed around an expanding bend 16 to separate the tobacco from the air stream. A picker roller 20 maintains an even depth in the separated stream, the excess tobacco picked off being deflected into the return pipe 22 and returned to the feed hopper 2 by a separating mechanism 38. The cutting mechanism 24 comprises single or opposed sets of cutting discs 126, Fig. 8, rotating at a high speed, e.g. with an edge velocity in excess of 300 feet per second, so that the cutting is performed by a high pressure shock wave at the cutting edges. The rodforming apparatus is provided with a planetary type cut-off 34. In a modification, Fig. 5, the air conveying stream flows in a closed circuit, the return pipe 118 from separator 38 being connected to the inlet of pump 106. The amount of air in the circuit is controlled by a valve 108 and an outlet 110 and subsidiary inlet 114 are controlled by interconnected valves 112, 116, to let hot, moist air out of the circuit and replace it by cool air. The valves 112, 116 may be controlled by thermostats. Specification 902,067 is referred to.
