Abstract

944,659. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Feb. 18, 1960 [March 9, 1959], No. 5853/60. Heading A2C. Rotary discs 32, Figs. 1 and 3, having perforated peripheries intercept tobacco sucked upwards in a duct 24 and carry it round for discharge to the stream-forming belt 72 of a continuous-rod machine. A fan 18 draws air up the duct 24 and applies suction through part-annular ducts 40 to retain tobacco to the discs 32 up to the points where compressed-air heads 56 assisted by scrapers (not shown) positively effect discharge. The fan 18 delivers to the entry of the duct 24 via a winnowing chamber 22 closed off by resilient sealing rollers 19, 23 and into which the tobacco is showered from a hopper 10 by a carded roller 14 and picker wheel 20, stems passing out via a rotary valve 28. In a modification. Figs. 7 and 11, the discs 32 are replaced by drums 140 having perforated peripheries and acting partly in series in that after receiving tobacco from a duct 119, each drum taken from left to right as seen in Fig. 8 adds its charge to that of the next drum, which rotates oppositely in the manner indicated in Fig. 9, appropriate suction cut-off shoes 142, 144 being used, the final charge being delivered to a paper web 148 on a belt 150 by a suction cut-off and perhaps blower member 147 and a scraper 145. A picker wheel 153 removes high spots from the final charge. The air current in the duct 119 is maintained by a fan 122 drawing from the drum interiors via valved ducts 130, a valve vent duct 154 maintaining the system at low pressure to minimize dust egress. Tobacco is fed to the duct 119 by the perforated periphery of a rotary roller 114 having a coacting air-seal conveyer 118 and on to which the tobacco from a hopper 102 is showered. Stems fall to a box 126. The drums 140 may have recessed peripheries and are mounted on links 151, Fig. 11, which may be leftwardly spring-loaded.
