Abstract

942,389. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Feb. 8, 1960 [March 13, 1959], No. 4426/60. Heading A2C. Suction applied through the perforated periphery of a narrow rotary drum 20 gathers thereon a layer of tobacco which is carried round and discharged on to the cigarette paper 52 of a continuous rod machine having (Fig. 2, not shown) the usual compression wheel and tongue, paster, sealer and cut-off. The suction is caused by a fan 26 in a closed circuit including stationary suction-distributing channels 34 in the drum 20, co-acting valved channels 36, ducting 30, 40, a grid 42 having graduated perforations and a chamber adjacent the drum 20 and into which the tobacco is winnowed by a vaned roller 14, stems passing to a box 22. To prevent small particle settlement, a by-pass circuit 48, 46 supplies air via a grid 44A with graduated perforations. Discharge of tobacco to the paper 52 is effected by a scraper (not shown) and a suction cut-off member 50 which may itself discharge compressed air through the drum periphery. The roller 14 is supplied from a movablefloor hopper 2 by carded feed and refuser rollers 6, 8, tampers 10 and a picker roll 12. A resilient air-sealing roller 44 is provided. The drum 20 is self-cleaning by virtue of the air passing completely thereacross.
