Abstract

1386778 Feeding tobacco MOLINS LTD 27 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 35512/71 Heading A2C A cigarette filler stream is transferred from one conveyer to another conveyer, at least one of the conveyers carrying the filler stream by means of suction, the other conveyer being air pervious and arranged to allow air to pass outwardly through it in the region where it lies close to, but inclined to, the filler stream being carried by the suction conveyer, so as to allow air to enter the filler stream in a direction transverse to the suction conveyer. As shown, both conveyers carry the filler stream 20 by suction, the first conveyer comprising an air-pervious band 4 backed by a suction chamber 6, and the second conveyer comprising a wheel 16 having a perforated peripheral part communicating with a suction chamber 26. Each conveyer also communicates through its airpervious surface with a pocket 44, 42 respectively. The pockets 42, 44 are open to atmosphere, and the conveyers are surrounded by covers 28, 34, 40, 41 vented at their sides to atmosphere so as to maintain a slightly reduced pressure within suction spaces 30, 34 that they define, so that air is caused to flow through the filler stream 20 in the viscinity of the transfer point 22 in the directions shown by the arrows. The covers 28, 34, 40, 41 may be omitted, in which case a similar effect is obtained by feeding the pockets 42, 44 with air at a pressure slightly above atmospheric. A pocket 46, associated with the wheel 16, is supplied with compressed air to blow tobacco dust &c from the wheel 16 into a recess 48 from which it is drawn away by suction.
