994,854. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 26, 1963 [March 30, 1962], No. 11973/63. Heading A2C. A cigarette manufacturing machine for forming, compacting and straightening a tobacco stream comprises a conveyer 1 on which tobacco is showered, first,' second and third peripherally grooved suction wheels 7, 8 and 9, a paper strip 5 on which the tobacco is deposited for formation into a cigarette rod, means for directing the tobacco successively on to the first, second and third suction wheels, and means coacting with the wheel 8 for pressing and aligning the tobacco into a uniform stream of standardised cross-section and density. The first suction wheel 7 is arranged to rotate at a higher peripheral speed than the wheel 8 so as to create an air draft F5 which compacts the stream on to the wheel 8. Spring blades 10 are provided for compacting and smoothing the stream radially of the wheel 8. The wheel 8 and the blades 10 may be as described in Specification 930,053. A wheel 9 and plate 12 serve to remove excess tobacco from the stream before it is transferred to the third suction wheel 9 which rotates at the same peripheral speed as the wheel 8. Suction is applied to the wheels 7, 8 and 9 in conconventional manner.
