Abstract

982,382. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Sept. 14, 1961, No. 33076/61. Heading A2C. To convert a non-uniform tobacco stream 10 into a uniform stream first the density, and then the dimensions, of the stream are made uniform. The non-uniform stream 10 is trimmed to a uniform cross-section by a trimmer 14 and the density of the stream then measured by a detector 20. A control mechanism 22 operates in response to the signal from the detector 20 to operate an arm 32, having a compacting shoe 34, which presses on the stream to make the density uniform. The uneven, but uniformally dense, stream is then trimmed to uniform cross-section by a second trimmer 35. In an alternative arrangement the trimmer 35 may be arranged to rotate in the same direction as the stream travels and the arm 32 may have a bifurcated end, the trimmer being positioned between the bifurcations.
