Tobacco feeding mechanism for continuous rod cigarette making machines comprises a conveyer belt 10 on to which tobacco is showered to form a filler stream in excess of the bulk required, tobacco guiding means 18 to confine and compress the tobacco on the belt 10 along a path of diminshing cross-section, and trimming means 20 for removing excess tobacco. The guiding means 18 comprises blocks 22, 26 and 28, the blocks 28 having sections 32 attached which are capable of being deformed by screws 30 so as to constrict the tobacco path. The trimmer 20 comprises a wheel 34 having teeth 48 which remove the excess tobacco which has been forced upwardly from the rod as shown in Fig. 3. Trimmer 20 co-operates with a ledger plate 36 having a tail portion 50 which mantains the trimmed tobacco in a compact condition. The rod finally passes under a forming disc 54 having a concave transverse periphery to a paper web P for completion into cigarettes by conventional means. In further embodiments, sections 32 are replaced by a bar 60 (Fig. 5) of progressively increasing depth and the trimmer wheel may be pivotally mounted on the ledger plate and controlled in response to variations from the desired weight of successive batches of, say, 1,000 cigarettes. The trimmer wheel may also be mounted transversely on the belt 10 (Fig. 8, not shown).
