Abstract

881,024. Cigarette-making machines. USINES DECOUPLE. Dec. 18, 1957 [Jan. 10, 1957], No. 39346/57. Class 130. A tobacco filler which is denser at desired portions than at others is made by showering tobacco on to a travelling belt 2 to form a stream whose depth at all points along its length is greater than required, removing tobacco by coacting rotary trimming discs 9 having raised portions 14 such that the stream depth is greater at the desired portions than at others, and laterally compressing the stream to substantially constant cross-sectional area, e.g. under a vertical wheel, before passing it to a travelling paper web for wrapping therein to form a continuous cigarette rod having portions 10% denser than the remainder of the rod and spaced apart by one or two cigarette lengths. The discs 9 rotate oppositely at a peripheral speed about 15% higher than the stream speed and are not quite in contact. A rotary brush 10 delivers trimmed-off tobacco between walls 12, 13 which guide it to a travelling band returning it to the shower.
