Abstract

989,973. Cigarette making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 29, 1962 [Oct. 27, 1961], No. 40750/62. Heading A2C. Tobacco T is fed from a trough 10, 12 between moving surfaces 14, 16 which compact it on to an endless belt 20 to form a stream 18 of uniform density. The stream is trimmed by a pin wheel 24 before being fed on to a paper strip 36 of a cigarette rod forming mechanism. As shown, the moving surfaces 14, 16 consist of rollers having their axes parallel to the upper run of the belt 20. Alternatively, the surfaces may consist of endless belts (Fig 4, not shown) or the walls of a vibratory shoot (Fig 5, not shown). The rollers may be shaped as hyperboloids and made to rotate about axes which are tilted at an acute angle to the direction of travel of the upper run of the belt 20 so as to give the tobacco a component of motion along the direction of travel of the belt.
