Abstract

588,129. Tobacco-cutting machines. MOLINS, D. W., RUAU, F. F., DEARSLEY, G., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Jan. 31 1945, No. 2469. [Class 5 (i)] Relates to a rotary-knife tobacco-cutting machine of the type in which tobacco is compressed into a solid mass or, " cheese " which is fed to a slicing device. According to the invention, a vertically-stratified cheese is formed by convergent lateral conveyers, and the cutting blade is arranged to shear across the cheese substantially in the direction of compression of the cheese. In the form shown, tobacco leaves pass from a container 25 by way of a shoot 14 to the lower end of a laterallytapering passage formed by endless-belt conveyers. The floor of the passage comprises three parallel conveyers 10, 11 and 12, Fig. 2, of which the central conveyer 10 is the longest. The roof of the passage is parallel to the floor and is formed by a single conveyer 7 and fixed side plates, Fig. 6 (not shown). The side walls comprise forwardly-converging conveyers 8 and 9 which compress the tobacco into a verticallystratified cheese as it passes forwardly to a cutting mouth 3 across which knife blades 2 sweep. The blades, which are mounted on a spider 1 rotating about an axis 4, are arranged to shear across the cheese in a direction parallel to the direction of compression. The whole machine is tilted slightly so that the mouth 3 is at a higher level than the inlet end of the passage to allow for a conveyer (not shown) to carry away the cut tobacco. To facilitate the downward movement of the tobacco from the container 25, the rear wall 16 of the shoot 14, which is pivoted at its upper end 17, may be oscillated by means of linkwork 19 and 20 and an eccentric 18. Specifications 365,997 and 516,805 are referred to.
