Abstract

854,736. Feeding tobacco. USINES DECOUFLE. Feb. 26, 1957 [Dec. 18, 1956], No. 6407/57. Addition to 764,551. Class 130 Apparatus as in the parent Specification, in which tobacco particles from a conveyer 6, Fig. 1, are carried up a smooth passage 8 by an air stream to form a cigarette filler on the underside of a perforated belt 10 through which suction is applied, is modified by the addition of oppositely rotating chamfered discs 23 having a peripheral speed slightly greater than that of the belt and which trim excess tobacco from the filler. Tobacco from a hopper 1 is delivered by a carded drum 3, acting in conjunction with a refuser drum 4 and a picker roller 5, to the conveyer 6, and excess tobacco trimmed from the belt 10 is returned to the hopper 1 by a paddle wheel 26 and belts 30, 31, 2, the wheel 26 actually being angled so as to deliver the tobacco in the direction of motion of the belt 20. The air stream and suction are caused by a fan (not shown) having an intake 17 and delivery 21. The conveyer 6 travels at 4 feet per second and the air stream at 30 feet per second. The part 9 of the passage 8 has walls diverging upwardly at 10 degrees to assist in supporting the filler on the belt 10. A frame supporting the members 26, 23 is vertically adjustable by a hand screw to vary the depth of the trimmed filler, the wheel 26 being driven via a universal joint to allow such adjustment. As shown in Fig. 2, the trimmed filler, preferably having at least half the final filler density required, is delivered to cigarette-paper web 42 which carries it through a a compression tongue 43 and rod-forming mechanism. Additional air may be drawn in between side walls 22, or be prevented from entering between them. Specifications 854,737 and 854,738 also are referred to.
