Abstract

958,205. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. June 2, 1960 [June 3, 1959], No. 19060/59. Heading A2C. A continuous rod cigarette making machine in which surplus tobacco is removed from the filler by a trimming device, is provided with means to detect variations in the quantity of surplus tobacco. In Fig. 1 surplus tobacco is removed from a filler, held by suction on a conveyer 1, by trimming knives 3 and a brush 4, the removed tobacco 7 being received in a shaking conveyer 5 which feeds it to a second conveyer 8 for return to the tobacco feed means. The thickness of the stream of surplus tobacco 7 is measured by a pivoted feeler 9; variations of more than a predetermined amount cause closing of a switch 16 or 17 to drive a reversible motor 19 in one direction or the other to adjust a variable pulley 26, thereby varying the speed of the drive shaft of the tobacco feed hopper 31 to adjust the tobacco feed. In a modification, Fig. 2, the thickness of the surplus tobacco stream is measured by the pressure variations in a suction box 42 drawing air therethrough, which pressure variations cause a bellows 45 to control a hydraulic pump and motor circuit 51 driving the tobacco hopper shaft 54. In Fig. 3 the quantity of surplus tobacco is measured by the pressure variations in an air stream drawn through the portion of the filter below the level of the trimming discs 3 by a suction tapping 63, the pressure variations controlling the tobacco feed as in Fig. 2.
