Abstract

1351413 Lap-forming machines CURLATOR CORP 30 May 1972 [7 June 1971] 25302/72 Heading DIN [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A lap forming device, which deposits airborne fibres onto a moving foraminous condenser 86, comprises means 250 for monitoring the air pressure in the air stream and varying the rate of flow of air to the condenser to compensate for differences in the air flow. As shown, fibre tufts from a hopper are fed from conveyor 40 in an air stream to a rotating foraminous drum 85. The air stream continues through the drum, past pressure gauge 250 to suction fan 70 and then to the atmosphere via damping plug 300. The position of the plug 300, and thus the air flow, is controlled by the pressure gauge 250 to keep the rate of flow of fibres and air to the drum constant. The pressure gauge acts on the damper plug 300 via electrical circuits (Figs. 3 and 4 not shown) and a reversible motor on a rack and pinion or worm wheel drive for the damper plug. A butterfly valve may replace the movable damper plug 300. Alternatively, the air flow through the condenser drum may be controlled by a variable speed motor driving the fan.
