Abstract

1285771 Automatic control of tobacco flow HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO K G 6 Aug 1969 [23 Aug 1968 21 March 1969] 39350/69 Heading G3R Tobacco removed from a bulk supply by a picker conveyor is supplied to a stationary container from which it is withdrawn at a controlled or predetermined rate, the picker conveyor being controlled by a signal dependent on the quantity of tobacco in the container so that the flow therefrom is substantially uniform. In one arrangement shown, bales 302 of compressed tobacco are swung on to a conveyor 308 by a transfer conveyor 332 and tobacco is removed therefrom by a spiked conveyor 307 and deposited in relatively loose form into a container 317. Tobacco is continuously removed from container 317 by a further spiked conveyor 324 and a photo-cell 319 is arranged to operate a delayed relay 323 and thereby switch on or off an electric motor 314 driving conveyors 307, 308 according to whether the tobacco in container 317 is below or above a predetermined level. The tobacco from conveyor 324 is supplied to another conveyor 341 pivotted at 361 and supported by a spring 363 so that a potentiometer 364 is operated according to the weight of tobacco. The output of potentiometer 364 is multiplied by the output of a tachometer generator 366 associated with a motor 325 driving conveyors 324, 341 so that a signal is produced at 365 corresponding to the mass rate of flow. This signal is compared at 370 with a signal from a potentiometer 372 corresponding to the desired rate of flow so that any error is automatically corrected by control of the speed of motor 325 through a controller 369. Modifications involving the removal of loose tobacco from a store in a container, e.g. to form a tobacco rod, by a conveyor driven by a two-speed motor automatically controlled to maintain the level in another container between predetermined limits are described. Automatic speed control of intermediate conveyors through magnetic amplifiers or thyristors to maintain a constant flow which may be varied in dependence on other factors is described.
