[Also in Division G3] A uniform tobacco stream is obtained by trimming off surplus to a contained, removing tobacco from the container, and returning it to the stream before trimming at a rate dependant on the mass per unit length of the stream before or after trimming. In Fig. 1, tobacco from a shower 1 is transported by a conveyer 7 as a stream 2 to a groove 9 in the periphery of a rotating wheel 8 in which it is held buy suction until transferred to a conveyer 11 and converted into a paper enclosed rod by a device 12. A constant thickness of tobacco is maintained by a trimmer 10 the surplus from which passes into a container 16. The level of tobacco in container 16 is maintained constant by a photo-cell and lamp assembly 39, 40, Fig. 2, controlling the feed of shower 1. Tobacco is continuously removed from container 16 by a spiked conveyer 31 and transported pneumatically through a conduit 17 to a portion of groove 9 before it receives tobacco from conveyer 7. The rate of removal of tobacco from container 16 is made proportional to the mass per unit length of the rod or stream by controlling the speed of conveyer 31 by a measuring device 33 or 34. In a modification, the tobacco removed from container 16 is returned to stream 2, instead of groove 9, by a spiked conveyer which may be horizontal or circular. In other modifications the tobacco trimmed off is transported pneumatically to a remote container in which the level is controlled and tobacco is removed by a spiked conveyer which feeds it either to the shower or to a portion of conveyer 7 before it receives tobacco from the shower.
