Apparatus for feeding cigarettes from a cigarette-making machine into the hopper of a cigarette-packing machine, comprises a conveyer system 7 to receive cigarettes from the cigarette-making machine 2 and to convey them towards the packing machine 1, a magazine 18 to receive the cigarettes and to feed them by feeding means 17 to the hopper, said magazine having a movable back 27 to vary the size of the hopper and detecter means 35a operated to vary the size of the magazine to maintain the level equal. As shown, cigarettes from making machine 3 of the continuous rod-type -are fed by conveyers 4, 5 on to the buckets of conveyer 8, the cigarettes being tipped at 101 into the buckets of conveyer 7 (which also receive cigarettes from making machine 2). In turn, the buckets of conveyer 7 are tipped at 104 so that the cigarettes fall into a heap which is fed forward by conveyer 17 and by roller 28, so that it falls down shoot 27 into magazine 18 and is finally fed forward by conveyer 26 into hopper 19 of packing machine 1. When there are too many cigarettes the magazine 18 is expanded by the elevation of flap 35A which operates a switch to control a motor 36 to drive screw 72 and so retract carriage 38 carrying shoot 27 and conveyer 17. A second pivoted flap 37 controls the rate of discharge of cigarettes by conveyer 26. The conveyer 17 may be replaced by an oscillating system of bars.
