1411143 Feeding tobacco HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 15 Jan 1973 [26 Jan 1972 5 July 1972] 1973/73 Heading A2C In an apparatus for transferring particulate tobacco, such as cut tobacco or shredded tobacco, from a tobacco delivering first conveyor 23 of a continuous rod machine, which conveyer 23 is arranged to be driven at a speed dependent on the speed of the rod machine, into a channel 3 having a tobacco receiving second conveyor 4 for conveying the tobacco away in the form of a tobacco rod 2; a mechanically operating accelerating means 29 is disposed at a location between the first conveyer 23 and the second conveyor 4 and downstream of the delivery zone of the first conveyer 23 and is arranged to accelerate the tobacco in the direction of the second conveyer 4, the accelerating means 29 being arranged to be driven independently of the speed of the machine. As shown in Fig 2, the accelerating means 29 comprises a driven roll furnished with bristles 28 that accelerates downwardly an already downwardly falling tobacco stream. In another embodiment, tobacco picked off a spiked feeder roll (141), Fig 4b (not shown), is conveyed pneumatically up a duct 146, Fig 4a, at the top of which it is first winnowed to remove large rib fragments and the winnowed tobacco is accelerated downwards to the second conveyer 104. In a modificaton of the Fig 4a embodiment, Fig 5 (not shown), previously winnowed tobacco is pneumaticaly fed up a duct and round a semi-circular portion at its top to fall downwardly onto the bristles of the accelerator roll. In a further modification, Fig 6 (not shown) tobacco, upwardly fed in a duct, is accelerated upwardly onto the underside of a suction conveyor sited above the accelerator roll. In a modification of the Fig 2 embodiment, Fig 7 (not shown), the first conveyer takes the form of a spiked feeder roll (441) that removes tobacco from an intermediate tobacco store (435) the level of which is controlled by photo-electric means (440). The tobacco, picked off the roll (441) by a beater roll (444), is projected into a funnel (434) formed by a wall (433) and an accelerator roll (429) generally similar to the corresponding funnel 34 in Fig 2.
