E.] Oct. 8, 1934, Nos. 28775 and 28776. Addition to 440,182. [Class 94 (i)] [See also Group VI] In an arrangement for forming a continuous tobacco filler for making cigarettes, or for cutting into sections to be inserted in packages, as described in the parent Specification, in which the tobacco is fed towards a conveyer at a higher speed than that of the conveyer and is confined as to its cross-sectional size where the change in speed occurs so that the particles of tobacco are compacted axially of the filler, means are provided for feeding the tobacco towards the conveyer in the form of separated particles. In the particular forms described, the tobacco is separated into particles by being blown forwards by an air blast, or thrown forwards by a picker roller, at a higher speed than the conveyer. Figs. 1 and 2 show the air-blast form, in which the tobacco is showered down a hopper 11, 12 on the advancing paper web 10 travelling in a trough 16, the tobacco being blown forwards by jets 14 of compressed air supplied through conduits 15 at the sides of the trough. In this way, the particles of tobacco are blown forwards, before settling on the paper web, into a confining-passage formed by a plate 17 and a moving band 18, so that the compacted filler is built up and taken forward by the band 18 and the paper web, both moving at the same speed, which is less than that of the projected particles of tobacco. The tobacco may be given a forward component in the hopper by inclined plates 13, arranged as described in Specifications 325,265, [Class 1301], and 436,091. The band 18 may be replaced by a series of rollers or by a fixed plate, and both band and rollers may be roughened. Fig. 4 shows another form with a picker roller 28 throwing the tobacco particles forwards from a carded band 27 on to a conveyer 19 over which are arranged confining-rollers 20. The paper web 10 is inserted after the conveyer 19, which may move faster than the paper web, so as to give a second slowing-up in the advance of the tobacco.
