Abstract

567,883. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 18, 1943, No. 4435. Convention date, April 3, 1942. [Class 130] A method of feeding tebacco consists in separating from a main supply the shorts and a proportion of longer shreds to serve as a binder, collecting the separated tobacco to form an additional supply, continuously removing tobacco from the two supplies and continuously combining and intermingling the tobacco so removed to form a common continuous stream. As shown, tobacco L in the main hopper M rests on smooth or roughened rollers 10 adjustably spaced, so that shorts and medium-sized shreds pass into a shoot 69 and a conveyer tube 71. The rollers 10, Fig. 2, are rotated by means of sprocket gearing, comprising sprockets decreasing progressively in size towards the feed drum 11 in order to prevent compacting tobacco between the. rollers. The sprockets are driven through a variable-speed mechanism V and the rollers are supported in bearing blocks 14 adjusted by means of levers 33, 37, 38 pivoted on a guide member 15 and connected by links 34, 40 to a block 41 adjusted by turning a screw 44. From the tube 71 the shorts and shreds are conveyed pneumatically to a separator 72, connected through a funnel 74 and conduit 171 to the suction side of a blower B, and are showered on a belt 73 forming the bottom of an auxiliary hopper A at the side of the main hopper M. The carded feed drum 11 extending through both hoppers A, M has short carding in the hopper M and longer carding in the hopper A in order to obtain a layer on the feed belt 87 of even height throughout. The cigarette paper strip P on which the tobacco is showered receives long shreds first and then short and medium-sized shreds.
