Abstract
1,038,552. Cigarette-making machines D. W. MOLINS and MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. March 27, 1963 [March 28, 1962], No. 11845/62., Heading A2C. In a method of forming a continuous filler of tobacco, cut tobacco is separated from stems and fed by main feeding means to the filler forming means, the stem portion being separated into usable and unusable stem. The usable stem portions are fed to the filler forming means by secondary feeding means and the unusuable stems are processed to form usable processed stems which are also fed to the filler forming means by the secondary feeding means. Tobacco is fed from a hopper 1 by a carded drum 2, picker roller 4 and winnower 6 into an air stream drawn through holes 7 and up a channel 9 as described in Specification 988,448 to form a filler stream on the underside of a perforated belt 101. Heavier tobacco particles, not drawn up the channel 9 are delivered into a trap 11 and are discharged by rollers 14, 15 into a passage 16 as described in Specification 1,038,551. An air stream. travels up the passage 16 from grills 19, 20 and carries any further light particles up the passage to the bottom of channel 9. Heavy particles fall on to an endless conveyer 21 which co-operates with a sieve 24. .Tobacco particles small enough to pass through the sieve fall on to an endless band 27 which passes over a vibrator 30. Unusable tobacco is collected in a pipe 26 and conveyed to a hopper 35 for processing into usable tobacco, e.g. as described in Specification 951,485. It is then delivered by a fluted band 31 on to the conveyer 27 via a refuser roller 36. The conveyer 27 also receives shorts S which have collected around the bottom of the drum 2 via guides 37, 38. The usable tobacco collected on the conveyer 27 from the hopper 35, guides 37, 38, and sieve 24 is fed between rollers 28, 39 to a channel 40 where an air stream carries it away to the bottom of the channel 9. The band 31 extends across only threequarters of the width of the conveyer 27, and a guide 44 is provided for restricting the shorts S to the same portion of the band 27, thus avoiding removal of the shorts and processed tobacco from the filler stream formed on the belt 101 by trimming mechanism.
