Abstract

914,821. Cigarette - making machines. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1958], No. 2019/58. Class 130. [Also in Group XXVIII] To obtain substantially uniform density in the operative part of a tobacco stream built up against the underside of a perforated metal band 1, Fig. 1, by suction therethrough to a chamber 5, for subsequent trimming by coacting discs 11 to a filler which is wrapped in cigarette paper 12 to form a continuous rod, one or each of the side walls 7 of a duct 8 up which the tobacco is drawn has a recess 18, Fig. 3, to allow part of the air to enter the tobacco stream sideways at a point or points slightly farther from the band 1 than are the discs 11. The first half of the duct 8 traversed by the band 1 has parallel side walls apart from a taper 7a, Fig. 3, and the upper part of the walls 7 continue in the direction of the band 1 beyond the duct 8 with recesses 118, Fig. 4, open to atmosphere. The discs 11 may be adjustable up and down in response to measurements effected on the tobacco stream or cigarette rod, or both. A pivoted flap 14 prevents air entry to the duct 8 over the wall 9. A louvred grill 15 of expanded metal acts as a by-pass to the band 1, air being drawn through the grill into a duct 16, Fig. 5, connected to the suction duct 29 of a fan 30 delivering air via ducting 34, expanded metal 37 and an apertured plate 44 to a space into which tobacco is showered by a hopper delivery means 21 . . . 23 and from which it is guided into the duct 8 round a rotating perforated cylinder 26 at the entry of the duct 29. The chamber 5 is connected to the suction duct 27 of a fan 28 delivering to atmosphere via cyclone separators 40. A separator 31 passes dust to the duct 27 and a separator 41 passes short tobacco via a valve 43 to the tobacco stream. Vanes 45 give the air stream in the duct 8 a component of motion in the direction of the tobacco stream movement. There is a trap 38 for short tobacco.
