Abstract

1452664 Automatic control systems SVENSKA TOBAKS AB 6 June 1974 [7 June 1973] 25218/74 Headings G3N and G3R In a system in which a mass of material (tobacco) is conveyed from one location to another measured values of the weight per unit time and the moisture content are fed to a computer which derives the solids content of the mass and the moisture which must be added to achieve a desired ratio of moisture to solids and also controls the process. As shown, moisture content is measured by a capacitance or infrared radiation device 16 and the weight by a belt weigher 20. The output of the computer 19 (not described) controls the speed of a motor driving belt 3, using thyristors, so as to keep the dry weight per unit time constant, and also adjusts via 26 the flow of water sprayed at 9, in a "saucing drum" 5. Also in this drum is added steam at 11 and sauce at 7 (of known moisture content) and the quantities of these substances may be controlled by the computer as well as, or instead of, the water supply. Alternatively, constant amounts of moisture and sauce may be added and the speed adjusted to produce the desired moisture in the output.
