843,043. Feeding tobacco to continuous-rod cigarette-making machines. USINES DECOUFLE. March 17, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 8451/58. Class 130. Cut tobacco is compacted in a passage having smooth lower and side walls, and an upper wall formed by a rough belt 18, the passage comprising straight portions 12 and 13 both slightly increasing in width between their upper and lower walls in the direction of tobacco flow and which are respectively inclined at about 50 degrees and 15 degrees to the horizontal, and a portion of reduced width between a roller 14 and the belt 18, the compacted tobacco being of approximately the same density as a tobacco rod 30 formed therefrom by rollers 24, 27 and a comb 26, and the height of tobacco in the portion 12 being regulated by a pivoted wall section 19 controlling via a switch 22 the driving motor of hopper feed rollers 4, 7 and a belt 2. The roller 4 has lengthened pins 5 at three places round its circumference. The speed of the belt 18 and of the surface of the roller 14 are respectively about four and three times the peripheral speed of the roller 24, and these speeds, and that of a roller 9, may be varied together relative to that of the cigarette-making machine driving shaft.
