Abstract

[Also in Division A2] In a machine for producing a wrapped tobacco rod 10 employing a fixed trimming device 4 to remove the excess tobacco from a stream carried by suction in a grooved wheel 3, the stream is compressed in advance of the trimmer by a roller 6 whose pressure is varied in accordance with the output of an unspecified measuring device 11 situated anywhere after (or alternatively, before) the trimmer.. The compression by the roller is supplemented by the suction, which may also be varied when the roller reaches the limits of its travel. It is stated that, alternatively, the roller pressure may be varied only after the limits of suction variation have been reached. The position of the roller 6, which is rotated at the speed of the tobacco stream and may be spring loaded, is adjusted by a cam 14 controlled by a device 13 which comprises a reversible, single speed, electric motor. This motor is energized in one direction or the other according to whether the output of the measuring device 11 is above or below a predetermined datum. The control device 13 incorporates slipping clutches (Figs. 13,14,15 not shown) so that, when the cam 14 reaches its limits, a cord pulley is rotated, the cord operating a valve in the suction pipe connected to the wheel 3 (Figs. 6, 7 not shown). When this pulley, in turn, reaches its limit in either direction, a switch is actuated which operates an indicator or shuts down the machine. The roller 6 may have projections on its periphery (Fig. 3, not shown) for compacting the ends of cigarettes, and a rotating brush 17, (Fig. 2 not shown) may be placed in advance of the roller to remove gross inequalities in the tobacco stream. The excess removed by the trimmer 4 is carried by a wheel 5 from which it is removed by a spiked roller 5b and returned to the main stream on belt 2.
